Suzin's Summer Essay That's Seriousish

I love the time of inevitable summer. When I go home, I sit on my bed by the open window with my favourite cat, Sambita. Together we observe the 9-12 shiny blue and black birds stalking across the front yard, snapping up grubs. We breathe in the sickly sweet scent of rotting petals from the tulip tree. The warm wind carries the additional smells of neighbors cutting grass, laying mulch, and cooking meat. Kids ride by on bicycles and skateboards, shouting at each other.

On campus, I leave the window open as well. I can hear guys calling out to their friends, cars driving by with windows down and music blaring, the tinkling laughs of girls clustered in groups on threes and fours. I can see the couples snuggling on and under blankets, kissing on the lawn because they think they're invisible. The sand volleyball games last all day, with players changing periodically as students leave to eat, pack, or check their mail. Neighborhood kids show up to challenge college guys to one-sided basketball games. Occasionally the sky clouds over and rain pours, while the students gather outside anyway, hoping to see their first tornado.
